Work has started on a 1.4-km extension of Birmingham’s Midland metro from Snow Hill station to New Street station in the city centre. The project, involving an investment of GBP128 million, is scheduled to open in 2015. The extension includes acquisition of a new fleet of trams as well as related depot enhancement works.
The project is being led by Centro, the Midland’s transport authority, in partnership with Birmingham City Council and the Black Country district authorities. Of the total project cost, the Department for Transport (DfT) will extend about GBP75 million.
The UK government had approved extension of the metro system in February 2012.
