Construction begins on Van Ness BRT, San Francisco [free access]

San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has begun construction work on the Van Ness bus rapid transit (BRT) project. The corridor will span 3.2 km (2 miles) in dedicated lanes along US Highway 101/Van Ness Avenue, covering nine stops. Construction is planned to be completed in 2019.


The project cost is estimated at USD316 million, and will be funded by the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Capital Investment Grant programme (USD45 million) and the Bus and Bus Facilities programme (USD30 million), and state and local government sources including San Francisco Proposition K funds, State Highway Operation and Protection Program, Public Utilities Commission Local Funds and SFMTA Revenue Bonds.
