Bombardier-Siemens merger considered to improve competitiveness [free access]

April 12, 2017

A merger between Bombardier Transportation and Siemens Mobility, the railway equipment manufacturing divisions of Canada-based Bombardier and Germany-based Siemens, is under consideration to compete with China's CRRC Corporation, which is rapidly gaining world market share. The merger will allow rationalisation of manufacturing plants, leading to lower costs and improved competitiveness.

However, the merger is expected to face opposition from competition regulatory authorities in Europe, where both companies have a considerable presence, because it is likely to result in plant closures and redundancies.
