Gauteng to introduce integrated bank card for public transport, South Africa [free access]

July 10, 2017

Gauteng Provincial Government has announced plans to introduce a single electronic ticket comprising a Europay, MasterCard and Visa (EMV) card for all modes of public transport including taxis, buses and trains in October 2018. The Roads and Transport Department has already received ZAR6.8 billion for the project.

The pilot project is a part of the 25-year Integrated Transport Master Plan (ITMP25), which includes development of a fully-integrated automatic fare collection (AFC) system for the province.

A similar card-based pilot project was launched in Pretoria in 2016 by the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) for minibuses and taxis in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Mabopane (JPM) route.
