MTC extends fare system contract with Cubic [free access]

August 4, 2017

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) of San Francisco Bay Area has extended the contract with Cubic Transportation Systems (Cubic) for operations and maintenance services supporting the regional Clipper card fare payment system from 2019 to 2024. The value of the contract is USD125 million (USD25 million per year).

Clipper is currently used by 22 regional transit operators, including Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni), Caltrain, and Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit. It accounts for approximately 800,000 trips per day, which is more than 50 per cent of the total Bay Area transit trips.

MTC deployed Clipper cards in 2009, when Cubic secured a 10-year contract to operate and maintain the regional fare system.
