SNCF to reopen Belfort-Delle HSR line by December 2018 [free access]

French railway operator, Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français (SNCF), has announced plans to reopen the 22-km Belfort-Delle high –speed rail (HSR) line on December 9, 2018.  The line connects the Rhine-Rhône HSR line at Belfort-Montbéliard TGV station in France to the rail network at Delémont and Biel/Bienne station in Switzerland. It has been out of service since 1992.


Reconstruction and electrification works began in September 2015 and are expected to be completed by mid-2018. Five intermediary stations will be reopened on the route.


The project cost of EUR110.5 million is being funded by the Franche-Comté Region (EUR30.9 million); the Government of France (EUR30.5 million); the Swiss Confederation (EUR24.7 million); the General Council of Belfort (EUR5.1 million), SNCF Réseau (EUR4 million); the Republic and Canton of Jura (EUR3.2 million); the European Union (EUR9.3 million); the Communauté d'Agglomération Belfortaine (EUR2.3 million) and the Community of Southern Territories (EUR500,000).


The journey time from Belfort will be 25 minutes to Delle; 10 minutes to the TGV station (from city centre); and one hour 43 minutes to Biel/Bienne.
