UK to invest GBP80 million in smart ticketing by 2018 [free access]

The Government of United Kingdom has announced a GBP80-million programme to introduce smart ticketing across England and Wales by the end of 2018. The new system will enable the use of mobile tickets barcode ticketing and smart cards on mobile phone.


The Department for Transport is working with the Rail Delivery Group to introduce ticketing systems with more payment options.


In addition, pay-as-you-go travel is being rolled-out across the rail network. Govia Thameslink Railway has announced plans to launch the contactless stored-value smartcard KeyGo for the entire Thameslink, Southern and Great Northern services.
