Transport operators of Germany and Austria, and Association of German Transport Companies/ Verband deutscher Verkehrsunternehmen (VDV) has announced plans to jointly procure tram-train vehicles from a single manufacturer for respective systems under the VDV TramTrain project.

The VDV TramTrain project was founded in 2009 and is expected to create savings of over EUR100 million. It envisages procurement of up to 300 tram-train cars, of which around 180 will be deployed by AVG and VBK.

The project partners plan to launch a joint tender by late-2018, with delivery of up to four prototype vehicles by 2021. The delivery is expected to begin in 2024.

The Germany’s operators include Albtal Transport Company/ Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft (AVG, leader of VDV TramTrain Project), Karlsruhe Transport Authority/ Verkehrsbetriebe Karlsruhe (VBK), Saarbahn Netz GmbH, Kassel Transport Company/ Kasseler Verkehrs Gesellschaft mbH (KVG), Erms-Neckar-Bahn and Regionaltangente West (Frankfurt-am-Main). Austria’s operator is Schiene Oberösterreich.

The tram-train networks of these operators are based on the ‘Karlsruhe model’, which functions as a tram in the city and urban rail line in the suburbs.
