New Zealand deploys first electric bus in Auckland [free access]

March 7, 2018

Tranzit Group, Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) and Auckland University of Technology (AUT) have jointly launched the first electric bus on the North-City and South-City Campus bus routes in New Zealand. The bus can accommodate 35 seated passengers.

Tauranga-based Kiwi Bus Builders constructed the body of the bus and China-based Times Electric Group manufactured the electric engines and chassis. EECA and Tranzit Group jointly provided AUD738,500 to  develop charging infrastructure.

AUT will assess the performance of the buses, study the potential impact on the electricity grid and gather information on energy consumption, battery capacity, battery charging rate, duration and number of trips, mileage (km), average speed, charging duration and electricity consumption, regeneration and braking data.
