Laing O’Rourke to upgrade Sydney Metro Central station and Central Walk [free access]

Laing O’Rourke has secured an AUD955-million contract from the Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) to upgrade the Sydney Metro Central station and the Central Walk concourse.


The scope of work includes the construction of underground platforms at Central station beneath platforms 13 and 14 and the development of Central Walk, a 19-metre wide underground concourse connecting Chalmers Street to suburban rail platforms, Sydney Metro platforms, light rail and buses.


The upgradation work is expected to commence in 2018 and be completed in 2022. The Central station and Central Walk will commence services in 2024.


The daily footfall of passengers on the Central station is expected to increase from over 270,000 passengers currently to 450,000 passengers by 2040.
