San Diego MTS to purchase New Flyer’s electric buses for bus pilot programme, US [free access]

May 11, 2018

San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) has approved the purchase of six 12.12-metre (40-foot) long electric buses from New Flyer and options to purchase nine depot chargers, at a total investment of USD6 million. The buses are expected to arrive in mid-summer 2019.

The procurement is a part of MTS’s zero-emission bus pilot programme, which was approved in October 2017. Under the pilot programme, MTS plans to purchase nine zero-emissions buses, which will operate throughout San Diego for a period of two years.

Each bus will be able to travel 241.4-321.9 km (150-200 miles) in a single charge and will be equipped with 480-KW batteries, on-board video surveillance systems, wheelchair restraint systems, electric air conditioners (ACs) and engine coolant systems.

Six of the nine depot chargers will be installed at the Imperial Avenue Division as the primary operating facility for the zero-emissions bus pilot programme. The remaining three chargers will be installed at the other fixed route operating facilities.
