Metro de Medellín to refurbish 42 MAN trains [free access]

June 9, 2018

Metro de Medellín, the developer and operator of Medellín Metro, has announced plans to refurbish 42 three-car trains supplied by Germany-based MAN in 1995. The trains have a life of 30 years or 3.2 million km, whichever is earlier. The refurbishment programme is expected to extend the useful life of the trains by a further 20 years.

The scope of work includes replacement of current floor material with non-slip material and direct current (DC) traction system with alternate current (AC) system, optimisation of air compressors and suspension system, installation of LED lights, and better integration with the signalling system.

The cost of the refurbishment is estimated at COP420 billion. The tendering process is expected to start by end-2018 or early-2019 and be completed by 2024.
