CAF secures contracts to supply trams in Luxembourg, Germany and Sweden [free access]

June 6, 2018

Spain-based CAF has secured three contracts to supply trams to Luxembourg City (Luxembourg), Freiburg (Germany) and Lund (Sweden).

Luxtram has awarded a contract to supply 12 Urbos 3 trams for Phase II of the Luxembourg tram network, which is currently under construction. The trams are equipped with supercapacitor accumulator technology and ground-level rapid charging at stations, which saves energy by preventing rheostatic losses on the line, and optimises brake energy regeneration.

Skanetrafiken, the transport operator of the Skane region, has awarded the company a contract to supply seven Urbos trams for the city of Lund and maintain them for 10 years. Each five-section tram will be 32 metres long and will be deployed on the 5.5-km tram line covering nine stops, which is currently under construction.

The City of Freiburg has awarded a contract to supply five Urbos 100 trams, with an option to supply an additional seven trams. The trams are expected to be delivered by mid-2020 and will replace five high-floor GT8K vehicles supplied by Duewag AG. The contract value is not disclosed but the Land of Baden-Württemberg is contributing EUR5 million for the procurement. The city currently operates a fleet of 12 seven-section trams supplied by CAF under a contract secured in 2013.
