The Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development in Sri Lanka has started acquiring land for the construction of the fully-elevated light rail transit (LRT) system in Colombo. Passenger operations are expected to commence in 2025.

In addition, the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) has approved a USD1.7-billion equivalent yen denominated loan. The loan has an annual interest rate of 0.10 per cent and a term of 40 years with a grace period of 12 years.

The proposed route spans 25 km from Fort station to IT Park, covering 16 stations. It will be developed in seven phases. The ridership has been estimated at around 30,000 passengers per hour by 2035.
