Barletta to upgrade signalling for MBTA Red and Orange lines by 2022, US [free access]

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Fiscal and Management Control Board has awarded a USD217.7-million contract to Barletta Heavy Division Incorporated (Barletta) to upgrade and modernise the signal systems on the Red and Orange Lines by mid-2022 as part of the Red Line/Orange Line Infrastructure Improvement Program.

The scope of work includes the replacement of the existing analogue technology with next-generation digital audio frequency track circuits, replacement of the existing central instrument houses on the Columbia Junction of the Red Line with the latest train control technology, replacement of all cabling and switch machines from Forest Hills to State Street section on the Orange Line, and upgrading a series of switches at Andrew Station to a modern, remote-controlled crossover.
