February 19, 2019

Trial runs have begun on the 5.4-km extension of the Athens Tramway to Piraeus. The extension is a one-way loop, which connects Neo Faliro and Peace & Friendship Stadium, passing through Akti Posidonos. It covers 12 stops.

Greece-based Themeli SA secured the EUR61.5-million turnkey contract and was appointed as the general contractor for the extension. Netherlands-based edilon)(sedra has worked on the general design of the system, supplied materials, and provided technical support, training, and quality-control assistance. The company has supplied its prefabricated floating Slab Track System and Corkelast embedded rail systems (ERS), which will reduce noise and vibration. France-based Alstom is supplying 25 trams under a EUR54-million contract signed in July 2018.

The line will be extended to Kallipoli, covering 10 stops, and further to Keratsini, covering 3.8 km and six stops.
