March 6, 2019

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has awarded a EUR80 million contract to Alstom and Barletta Heavy Division to upgrade the signalling systems on the Red and Orange lines of the subway system. Under the contract, Alstom will replace the current relay-based train controls with the integrated vital processor interlocking (iVPI) system, supply the latest digital audio frequency technology, and deliver its new Model 5F wayside switch machines and LED signal modernisation works at the Southwest corridor of the Orange Line.

The work is expected to be completed in 2022. It will enable MBTA to increase its service frequency and enhance fleet performance.
