Biomethane bus deployed in Cork County, Ireland [free access]

March 29, 2019

Ireland’s Cork County has deployed a bus fuelled by biomethane (98 per cent methane). The bus will operate services from Lapps Quay in Cork City to the Centre for Marine and Renewable Energy (MaREI) in Ringaskiddy.

In line with the European Union (EU) deadlines to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and in accordance with the requirements of Budget 2018, Ireland will not procure diesel buses for public transport from July 1, 2019. The Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport has been conducting technology trials of diesel hybrid buses, battery-electric buses, electric hybrid buses, compressed natural gas (CNG) buses, and biomethane buses in Cork and Dublin.
