Chicago city approves plan to transition to 100 per cent electric bus fleet [free access]

April 15, 2019

The Chicago City Council has approved a resolution to transition to 100 per cent renewable energy by 2035, while the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) will convert its entire bus fleet into an electric bus fleet by 2040. The resolution makes Chicago the largest city in the US to commit to renewable energy. The city will develop an overarching plan for the transition by December 2020 that will include the key objectives of the plan and a timeline.

The CTA introduced its first electric bus in 2014 and awarded a contract to Proterra in June 2018 for the supply of 20 all-electric buses.
