MBTA to overhaul 27 additional commuter rail locomotives, US [free access]

April 29, 2019

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA’s) Fiscal and Management Control Board has voted to execute an option on a contract to overhaul 27 additional commuter rail locomotives at a cost of USD78.3 million. The original contract was signed with Motive Power Incorporated in June 2017 and included the overhaul of 10 F40 models of the MBTA’s commuter rail legacy fleet.

The overhaul of the additional units is part of the MBTA’s plan to enhance the reliability of its commuter rail fleet. The scope of work includes refurbishment of the F40 models and addition of new features like remote monitoring and modern brake-and-control systems. The units are expected to be returned to the MBTA between November 2020 and the fall of 2021.
