Rio de Janeiro Metro deploys NFC ticketing, Brazil [free access]

April 29, 2019

MetrôRio, the operator of Rio de Janeiro Metro, in partnership with Visa and Brazil-based Cielo, Banco do Brasil, and Bradesco, has launched near field communication (NFC)-based ticketing on the network. Passengers can now purchase tickets using NFC-enabled mobile phones, wristbands, and smartwatches as well as credit cards equipped with NFC chips.

The system uses Visa Secure Access Module (SAM), which enables passengers to pay the fare using their NFC-enabled devices and credit cards without having to replace the existing turnstiles and terminal hardware. This solution has been developed by Visa in collaboration with Brazil-based Planeta Informática and  Digicon and France-based Ingenico Group. MetrôRio is the first transit operator to adopt this solution.

Rio de Janeiro Metro comprises three lines which collectively span over 50 km and cover 41 stations.
