EIB finances procurement of 254 clean buses for Barcelona, Spain [free access]

May 30, 2019

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has signed a EUR73.5million financing agreement with Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB), the public transport operator in Barcelona, for procurement of 254 clean buses. In addition, the EIB will also provide funds to improve the on-board information system as well as to construct new electric charging stations.

TMB will procure 116 electric buses, 63 hybrids buses, and 75 buses fuelled by compressed natural gas (CNG). The first 105 buses will be deployed by late-2019, another 75 buses by 2020, and the remaining 74 buses by 2021. The 116 electric buses will be deployed on main lines such as the H16 horizontal line, the V11, V13, and V15 vertical lines, as well as some local lines, which will allow the transport authority to convert entire lines to zero-emission lines.

The EIB is financing the procurements under its Cleaner Transport Facility (CTF) programme, an initiative to support the deployment of cleaner transport vehicles and their associated infrastructure in Europe. Under this initiative, in addition to Barcelona, the EIB has provided financing to renew the city bus fleets of Las Palmas, Palma de Mallorca, and Valencia.
