TMB to procure 29 electric buses, Spain [free access]

Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB), the public transport operator in Barcelona, has announced plans to publish a tender for 29 electric buses (23 articulated buses and six minibuses) to replace the existing fleet of buses fuelled by diesel and compressed natural gas (CNG).


The tender will be launched in two parts. The first part will comprise the supply of 23 articulated electric buses for service on the high-performance lines of Barcelona’s bus network. The estimated budget of the contract is EUR22 million. The second part will comprisethe supply of six electric minibuses for service on the Barri Bus lines. The estimated budget of the contract is EUR2 million.


The delivery of vehicles is expected to begin by the end of 2020 and to be completed by the first of 2021.


The tender is a part of Barcelona’s Bus Fleet Renewal Plan for 2019–21, which involves an investment of EUR115 million and the procurement of 254 clean buses. TMB will procure 116 electric buses, 63 hybrids buses, and 75 buses fuelled by compressed natural gas (CNG).


In May 2019, the European Investment Bank (EIB) signed a EUR73.5million financing agreement with TMB for the procurement of 254 clean buses.
