Indian government approves plan to deploy over 5,000 electric buses [free access]

The Government of India has approved plans to deploy 5,595 electric buses on inter-city and intra-city routes under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid and) Electric Vehicles (FAME) 2 scheme. The states and union territories in which these buses will be deployed have been decided on the basis of the expressions of interest (EoIs) received by India’s Department of Heavy Industry (DHI). DHI had received a total of 86 proposals from 26 states and union territories to deploy around 15,000 buses.


Of these, 5,095 buses will be deployed on intra-city routes, 400 buses will be deployed on inter-city routes, and 400 buses will be deployed by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to improve last-mile connectivity. For intra-city operations, the maximum number of buses will be deployed in the states of Maharashtra (725 buses), followed by Uttar Pradesh (600 buses), Gujarat (550 buses), and Tamil Nadu (525 buses).
