Bangkok MRT Orange Line extension approved; tender for PPP concessionaire to be launched in October 2020 [free access]

The Government of Thailand has approved plans to develop the West Extension of Bangkok Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Orange Line on a public private partnership (PPP) basis. The western section will span 13.4 km (fully underground) and cover 11 stations. Passenger services are expected to commence by 2026.


It will be developed at an estimated investment of THB142.79 billion. The national government will fund the land ownership cost, while the private concessionaire will fund the civil works, procurement of rolling stock, and operations and maintenance (O&M) services. The duration of the concession period will be 30 years.


In addition, the bidding process to appoint the concessionaire is expected to commence in October 2020. The contract is expected to be awarded in 2021.
