United States: Bus rolling stock and ridership trends in New York [free access]

The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has the largest bus fleet in the US. Buses in New York are operated by the MTA New York City Transit and MTA Bus Company. Between 2009 and 2018, the ridership on MTA New York City Transit buses declined at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.67 per cent, whereas ridership on MTA Bus Company buses increased at a CAGR of 0.13 per cent.

 

The overall bus ridership has contracted at a CAGR of 2.62 per cent. The decline in bus ridership is attributed to declining fuel prices and the increased popularity of ride-hailing and ride-sharing mobile applications (apps).
