Stadler has secured a framework contract from Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG), the public transport company of Berlin, to supply up to 1,500 metro cars for the U-Bahn network. The EUR 3 billion contract includes a fixed minimum order of 606 metro cars. The first call of order for 376 metro cars of two-car to four-car vehicle units for the network will be delivered by 2022. A EUR1.2 billion firm order for an additional 230 cars has also been placed. The framework agreement also provides for another optional order for 894 additional cars.

The new J/JK vehicles are based on Stadler-METRO vehicles. The new vehicles are energy efficient, have optimized noise reduction and improved depth of the door to permit passengers to board and alight faster.
