Government of Brazil to invest BRL75.7 million in Natal VLT [free access]

Brazil’s Ministry of Regional Development has announced plans to allocate BRL75.70 million to expand Natal’s veículo leve sobre trilhos (VLT)/ light rail transit system and to procure rolling stock for the existing system. In addition, Companhia Brasileira de Trens Urbanos (CBTU), the urban rail operator in Natal, will receive 30 wagons and three locomotives from Metrô de Fortaleza (MetroFor).


Of this amount, BRL53.70 million will be allocated to develop an extension of South Line and a new line (White Line) and BRL13 million will be allocated to develop a 3.6-km-long extension of North Line of Natal VLT. The remaining BRL9 million will be allocated to repair the rolling stock and to procure a locomotive.


The Natal VLT network comprises two lines which collectively span 56.2 km. It has an average daily ridership of 11,600 passengers.
