HS2 Ltd selects first five companies for Innovation Accelerator programme, UK [free access]

September 13, 2020

High Speed 2 (HS2) Ltd has selected the first five technology companies to join its Innovation Accelerator programme. The programme aims to develop technologies that will be integrated into the HS2 project. The companies will receive rent-free work space as well as commercial and technical support. The companies will begin work from September 2020. After six months, their work will be pitched to investors and businesses that are a part of the supply chain of the HS2 project.

The five companies are Buildots, Sensat, Cloudcycle, Dendra, and NatureMetrics. They were selected from 109 applicants. Buildots develops wearable camera technology employing artificial intelligence (AI) and employs a digital user interface to automate the tracking of construction progress comparing it with the design schedule. Sensat develops a cloud-based platform to capture and track infrastructure project data while employing 3D visualisation software that enables engineers to monitor projects remotely, thereby reducing the need for frequent site visits. Cloudcycle develops sensors for cement mixers to monitor the quality and properties of the concrete being mixed using real-time data management to optimise the use of concrete. It estimates that the technology could reduce concrete demand by up to 420,000 tonnes for HS2. Dendra employs drone and AI technologies to monitor plant conditions, which could be used to help plant and maintain the 225-km-long ‘green corridor’ of seven million trees and shrubs that HS2 intends to plant along its route. NatureMetrics develops biodiversity monitoring kits to sequence DNA into usable ecological information and tracks how habitats change; this information could also be used to monitor the condition of the HS2 green corridor.
