Macau LRT, Macao Special Administrative Region [free access]

Developer/ Operator: Sociedade do Metro Ligeiro de Macau/ Macao Light Rapid Transit Corporation Limited (MLM) is the developer. Its shareholders are the Government of Macao Special Administrative Region (96 per cent stake), the Industrial and Commercial Development Fund (3 per cent stake), and the Science and Technology Development Fund (1 per cent stake). In September 2019, the company signed a 10-year-long concession agreement with the government to provide operations and maintenance (O&M) services for the line.

 

Project description: Expansion of the light rail transit (LRT) network.

 

Background: The LRT network comprises one line (Taipa Line), which spans 9.3 km and covers 11 stations. Passenger services had commenced in late-2019. The line has been developed at an estimated investment of USD1.3 billion (MOP10.2 billion). The line has been constructed by Japan-based Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering (MHIENG) in collaboration with ITOCHU Corporation.

 

Rolling stock and technology: MHIENG has also supplied 55 two-car trains, the automatic train control (ATC) system, the electrical power supply systems, the communication systems, tracks, depot equipment, the platform screen door system, and the fare collection system for the project.

 

Fare media: Single-use tickets and prepaid electronic cards have been deployed as fare media.

 

Ridership: In August 2020, it had an average daily ridership of 2,100 passengers, down from an average daily ridership of 16,000 passengers in January 2020.

 

Capital plans: Two new lines spanning over 9 km are planned to be developed.
