CFE to supply electricity for section of Mayan Train, Mexico [free access]

Mexico’s National Tourism Promotion Fund/ Fondo Nacional de Fomento al Turismo (FONATUR) has signed an agreement with the Government of Mexico owned electric utility company Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) to modernise electrical infrastructure of Mérida-Cancún-Chetumal section of Mayan Train. This section will span around 680 km. Under this agreement, CEF will provide expertise and personnel to execute preliminary engineering, supervision and construction works for the installation of requisite infrastructure.

 

Initially, the Mérida-Cancún-Chetumal section is planned to be electrified and electric rolling stock will be deployed. Other sections may be electrified in future.

 

Mayan Train is an upcoming rail project in Mexico. It will span around 1,460 km and connect multiple cities in the country. The project involves an investment of USD6.70 billion and will be financed by the Government of Mexico and the private sector. Passenger services are expected to commence by 2024.
