September 12, 2019

The trial of a facial recognition-based ticketing technology has commenced on Guangzhou Metro. Currently, this trial is being conducted on Line 3 Guangzhouta Station and Line 21 Tianhezhihuicheng Station. The technology has been developed by Guangzhou Metro Group, in collaboration with 26 companies, including Tencent, Guangzhou Metro Design Institute, Jiadu Technology, and Guangdian Express.

Passengers need to register on the Guangzhou Metro mobile application (app) and on WeChat’s Guangzhou Metro programme. The fare will be deducted from mobile wallets or other fare media that has been registered by the passengers. The trial is expected to be conducted on other lines as well.

Guangzhou Metro comprises 14 lines which collectively span 478 km and cover 257 stations. In 2018, it had a ridership of 30.25 million passengers.
