Joint EMU tender launched by three Swiss operators [free access]

Swiss Federal Railways/ Schweizerische Bundesbahnen (SBB), Thurbo, and Region Alps have launched a joint tender for 194 single-deck S-Bahn electric multiple units (EMUs) to replace the existing life-expired trains. The pre-qualification process for bidders will be completed by the end of 2020 and the three best bids will be selected for evaluation. The contract is valued at CHF1.5 billion. The first train is expected to commence service in December 2025, with the final train expected to be delivered by 2048.

 

Of the total, SBB will receive 106 trains, Thurbo will receive 70, and Region Alps will receive 18. The contract will also include options to supply up to 316 trains as well as the maintenance and  installation of the European Train Control System (ETCS). The trains will need to be designed to operate in Germany and Austria.
