December 23, 2020

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has approved the Chicago Transit Authority’s (CTA) Red Line Extension (RLE) Project to enter the New Starts Project Development phase of the Capital Investment Grants (CIG) Programme.

The development phase will last for a period of two years. It will include the completion of the project’s final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and preliminary engineering documents to meet the federal requirements for this phase.

The project is estimated to cost USD2.3 billion. A total of USD310 million was included in the CTA’s 2020 capital budget towards fulfilling the 30 per cent non‐Federal CIG match commitment.

The extension will span 9 km and serve four new stations near 103rd Street, 111th Street, Michigan Avenue, and 130th Street. The project is a part of the Red Ahead Programme aimed at extending and enhancing the Red Line.
