Construction contract awarded for Mayan Train Section 5, Mexico [free access]

A consortium of Acciona Infrastructure Mexico and Grupo México has secured a construction contract from Mexico’s National Tourism Promotion Fund/ Fondo Nacional de Fomento al Turismo (FONATUR) for Section 5 South of the Mayan Train project. The value of the contract is EUR713 million.

 

The scope of work includes railway and road infrastructure works, construction of the 60.3-km double-track rail line, electrification, drainage, and construction of dirt roads and wildlife crossings.

 

FONATUR has also launched the bidding process for Section 5 (North), with the contract expected to be awarded in the second week of February 2021. The two Section 5 contracts (North and South) together comprise 117 km of the section of the Mayan Train project.

 

Mayan Train is an upcoming rail project in Mexico. It will span around 1,460 km and connect multiple cities in the country. The project involves an investment of USD6.70 billion. It will be financed by the Government of Mexico and the private sector. Passenger services are expected to commence by 2024.
