BLT selects Stadler as preferred bidder to supply LRVs, Switzerland [free access]

February 12, 2021

Baselland Transport (BLT), the public transport operator in Basel, has selected Stadler as the preferred bidder for a contract to supply a fleet of 25 light rail vehicles (LRVs). The new vehicles are expected to commence operation in October 2023. All the vehicles are expected to be delivered by 2025.

The contract is expected to be finalised in September 2021. It will also cover the provision of spare parts and will have an option for an additional 15 units. The contract is worth CHF125 million (inclusive of all options and services). The LRVs will be used to replace BLT’s ageing fleet of 40 Schindler trams from the late 1970s and the early 1980s.

The seven-section steel-bodied vehicles will be 45.5 metres long and 2.3 metres wide, with four powered bogies and one unpowered bogey. The vehicles will have a maximum speed of 80 km per hour and a total capacity of 268 passengers, including 103 seated. The vehicles will be 85 per cent low-floor with step-free access, and will be equipped with a collision warning system, CCTV, air-conditioning, an integrated passenger information system, and retractable steps.
