NJ Transit invites RfPs to procure electric buses, US [free access]

February 22, 2021

New Jersey Transit (NJ Transit) has invited requests for proposals (RfPs) to procure eight battery-electric buses. These buses will be deployed in the city of Camden. The deployment will allow NJ Transit to study the unique benefits and challenges of using zero-emissions vehicles in a real-world situation. NJ Transit will retain a third party to monitor the programme’s progress and to evaluate the performance of the electric buses.

The acquisition of the buses is part of an initiative taken by the government of New Jersey to mitigate the impact of climate change by transitioning 100 per cent to a zero-emissions bus fleet. In January 2020, the government signed legislation establishing goals to increase the use of zero-emissions vehicles in New Jersey. Under the initiative, at least 10 per cent of new bus purchases will be zero-emissions buses by December 31, 2024, at least 50 per cent by December 31, 2026, and 100 per cent by December 31, 2032.

In September 2020, NJ Transit awarded a USD3.235million contract to Scalfo Electric of Vineland to renovate the Newton Avenue Bus Garage with electric vehicle charging stations and other associated infrastructural modifications by the summer of 2021. Further, a new Northern Bus Garage is planned to be constructed with the relevant charging infrastructure to support a fleet of up to 500 buses.
