INCOFER begins trial of bank cards on rail; KNR to conduct feasibility study for rail project, Costa Rica [free access]

February 26, 2021

Instituto Costarricense de Ferrocarriles (INCOFER), the national rail operator of Costa Rica, has commenced trials on the rail network on the deployment of bank cards as fare media. Currently, only INCOFER personnel can participate in the trial. The trial is being financed and supported by the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB). The commencement of the trial is in line with the Government of Costa Rica’s plan to deploy Europay-Mastercard-Visa (EMV) and quick response (QR)-based mobile ticketing systems on the public transport network in the country. By July 2021, the fare media will be deployed on all rail services. In September 2021, it will be deployed gradually on bus services.

In addition, Korea National Railway has signed a contract with INCOFER to conduct a feasibility study to rehabilitate the San Jose–Puntarenas rail service. South Korea-based Dongil Engineering and Soosung Engineering and Consulting are also participating in this study. The rail line spans 98.3 km.
