Hitachi Rail acquires technology firm Perpetuum [free access]

April 1, 2021

Italy-based Hitachi Rail has announced that it has completed the acquisition of UK-based rail technology firm Perpetuum. Hitachi Rail had agreed to acquire Perpetuum in August 2020.

The acquisition is expected to improve Hitachi Rail’s railway operations by using Perpetuum’s wireless sensors that remotely detect faults while the trains are running. The sensors also estimate the ‘health status’ of the components and identify potential problems so that these  can be fixed in time. The sensors do not require batteries and also reduce the cost of maintenance.
