April 19, 2021

BYD has concluded the first electric bus trial in Pakistan. The company had supplied a fleet of 10 buses, which underwent trials for 15 days in Karachi, the largest city in the country. Each bus can cover a distance of around 250 km in a single charge and can be fully charged in two to three hours.

In addition, the Transport & Mass Transit Department of Sindh province has announced plans to deploy 100 electric buses in Karachi by end-2021. Furthermore, plans have been announced to procure 250 diesel–electric hybrid buses in six cities (Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Mirpurkhas, and Shaheed Benazirabad) of the province. The tender(s) are planned to be launched soon. The procurement is a part of the Sindh Intra-District Peoples’ Bus Service Project and involves an investment of PKR8 billion. The provincial government will invest around PKR4 billion in the project.
