DOTr announces timeline for rail projects, Philippines [free access]

April 26, 2021

The Philippines’ Department of Transportation (DoTr) has announced plans to complete 163 infrastructure projects (with either full or partial operability) across multiple sectors in 2021. These projects involve a total investment of PHP88.75 billion. Of the total investment, rail projects having a combined investment of PHP34.43 billion are scheduled to be completed this year.

In addition, DoTr has delayed the commencement of operations on Manila Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) East Extension to June 2021. Passenger services were initially scheduled to commence in end-April 2021, but had to be delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Trial operations will commence by end-April 2021. The extension spans 4 km and covers two stations. The extension is expected to increase the total ridership on LRT-2 by a third.

Furthermore, DoTr has announced plans to open Common Station by end-2021. Common Station is an integrated transit hub offering interchange facilities for Manila LRT-1, the Manila Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) network, and Metro Manila Subway. The project has been delayed by nine years.
