Government of France allocates EUR4.1 billion to Bordeaux–Toulouse HSR project [free access]

April 29, 2021

The Government of France has allocated EUR4.1 billion for the EUR6 billon project to construct a 222-km-long high speed rail (HSR) line from Bordeaux to Toulouse. The government plans to seek funding for 20 per cent of the total cost of the HSR project from the European Union (EU). The remaining funding is expected to be provided by local authorities along the line.

The Bordeaux–Toulouse HSR line will share a 55-km-long section south of Bordeaux with a planned HSR line to Spain. The construction of the new Bordeaux–Toulouse HSR line is expected to commence in 2024, with the line starting operations in 2030. The line will reduce the journey time between Bordeaux and Toulouse from 2 hours 10 minutes to 1 hour, and the journey time between Paris and Toulouse from about 4 hours 20 minutes to 3 hours.

The Government of France has also announced plans to accelerate the construction of the Montpellier–Béziers section of the future HSR line from Montpellier to Perpignan. The permission to move forward with the entire project is expected to be obtained in 2022.
