Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx have awarded a CAD757.1 million (USD627.8 million) contract to Strabag AG to design, build, and finance the Scarborough Subway Extension tunnel.

The scope of works includes supplying the tunnel-boring machines to bore 7.8 km of tunnel between Kennedy Station and McCowan Road/Sheppard Avenue that will shuttle passengers on the Toronto Transit Commission’s (TTC) Line 2 into Scarborough.

Strabag Inc. will lead the construction team and serve as the project’s financial advisor. Project design works will be undertaken by Arup Canada Inc. and Brian Isherwood & Associated Ltd. The onsite mobilisation and pre-construction work started in spring 2021. The launch shaft construction is expected to start this month (June 2021). Major tunnel boring is expected to begin in 2022.

The Scarborough Subway Extension project will span 7.8 km and serve stations at Lawrence Avenue, McCowan Road, and Scarborough Centre, and a new terminal station at Sheppard Avenue and McCowan Road. Construction is expected to be completed by 2030.
