Egypt’s Transport Ministry awards contract to operate Cairo subway Line 3; receives 22 passenger coaches [free access]

Egypt’s Transport Ministry has announced that a French company has secured a contract to operate Line 3 of the Cairo metro and the electric light rail (LRT) system for a period of 15 years. The name of the company is yet to be announced.


Further, Egypt’s Transport Ministry has received 22 additional passenger coaches from Russia’s Transmashholding company, bringing the total number of coaches to 407. The delivery of the coaches is a part of a EUR1.16 billion contract signed in 2018 between the Egyptian National Railways (ENR) and Transmashholding to manufacture and supply 1,300 coaches. The contract includes the supply of 500 third-class units with forced ventilation, 500 third-class units with air-conditioning, 180 second-class units with air-conditioning, 30 second-class units with air-conditioning and buffets, and 90 first-class units with air-conditioning.
