Czech Republic: Trends in urban rail ridership [free access]

July 1, 2021

The urban rail network in the Czech Republic consists of a metro network spanning around 65 km (currently only in Prague) and a tram network spanning around 352 km (available in many major cities, including Prague, Ostrava, and Brno). The growth of the urban rail network in the country has remained fairly stagnant, with little to no expansion in the tram network between 2010 and 2019.

Between 2010 and 2019, Prague Metro ridership declined at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3 per cent. This decline can be attributed to the execution of modernisation, maintenance, and repair works.

Between 2013 and 2015, tram ridership declined steadily but recovered sharply from 2016 onwards. Overall, between 2010 and 2019, the tram ridership has remained fairly stable and has increased at a CAGR of 0.5 per cent.
