July 20, 2021

The city of Halifax has announced plans to procure the first 60 electric buses, including the charging infrastructure, with financial support from the provincial and national governments. The city plans to completely electrify its bus fleet by 2028.

The tender for the first 60 electric buses is expected to be launched in the summer of 2021. The first battery buses are due to be launched in Halifax in 2023, with full delivery scheduled to be completed by 2024. The funding will also be used to buy the necessary charging equipment and to expand the transit centre to accommodate the new fleet.

The procurement of the electric buses will be funded using three levels of government funds. The federal government will provide a funding of USD45 million, Nova Scotia province will provide a funding of USD37 million, and the Halifax Regional Municipality will provide a funding of USD30 million.
