September 1, 2021

The majority of the bus service in the Ile-de-France region is provided by Organisation Professionnelle des Transports d'Ile-de-France (OPTILE) and Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens (RATP). A total of 10,404 buses are operated in the region, of which OPTILE and RATP operate 55.5 per cent and 44.5 per cent buses, respectively. During 2011–19, 1,276 buses were added in the region.

The maximum increase has been witnessed in midibuses, almost to the tune of 39 per cent. The number of standard buses and articulated buses has increased by 8 per cent and 26 per cent, respectively. Mini buses have recorded a steep decline of 19 per cent. The demand for articulated buses is expected to increase in the future and fewer mini buses are planned to be procured.

The following table provides information about the bus fleet size by type of buses deployed.

Recently, efforts have been made to move towards a more sustainable mode of transportation in the region. Fully electric buses were added to the fleet beginning in 2017 and since then they have seen a remarkable growth in the region.Diesel-electric hybrid buses and electric buses have seen the maximum increase compared to other fuel types.

The following table provides information about the bus fleet by fuel type.
