Alstom’s first battery-electric train launched in Saxony, Germany [free access]

September 8, 2021

Alstom’s first battery-electric train has completed its initial trip on a rail route in the state of Saxony.  The propulsion mode of the new train was changed from overhead line operation to battery-electric travel during its initial run. This change will enable the trains to serve routes that are not fully covered by overhead lines. The prototype train has been developed in collaboration with Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin). Trains of the same model are expected to be deployed in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria from December 2021.

The current project originated from Alstom’s research collaboration with TU Berlin that started at the end of 2016. Additional research partners include DB Regio and the German National Innovation Programme for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology. The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) in Germany is funding the project.
