Developer: Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC) is the developer.

 

Project description: Development of a metro system in the city of Surat, India.

 

Background: The metro system will have two lines with a combined length of 40.35 km and will cover 38 stations.  

 

Line 1, Phase I will span 22.61 km from Sarthana to Dream City and will cover 20 stations. The line will have an elevated section of 15.14 km (14 stations) and an underground section of 6.47 km (6 stations).

Line 2 Phase I will span 18.74 km (elevated) from Bhesan to Saroli and will cover 18 stations.

 

Investment: Around INR120.20 billion (USD1.7 billion) will be invested in the project. The project will be financed through equity from the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat on a 50:50 basis, and through soft loans from France-based Agence française de développement (INR54.34 billion) and Germany-based KfW (undisclosed).

 

Timeline: The pre-construction work began in January 2021 and is expected to be completed by 2024.

 

Ridership: The daily ridership is estimated to be 663,670 passengers by 2026 with transit-oriented development (TOD) and is expected to grow to 1,786,430 passengers by 2046 with TOD.

 

Rolling stock: The trains will comprise three cars with a total carrying capacity of 764 passengers (136 seated and 628 standing). The fleet will be operated at an average speed of 34 km/hr and a maximum speed of 80 km/hr–90 km/hr.

 

Power supply and track: Power will be sourced from the third rail at 750V DC on both the lines. Track gauge will be standard gauge (1,435 mm).

 

Signalling system: Continuous automatic train control with cab signalling and the automatic train operation (ATO) system are planned to be deployed on the system.

 

Control system: The train control and management (TCMS/TIMS) system will be deployed on the network.

 

Maintenance facility: Two maintenance depots will be developed, one on each line. The depot will be located at Dream City on Line 1 and at Bhesan on Line 2.

 

Fare collection: An automatic fare collection (AFC) system will be deployed for fare collection. The system will include contactless smartcard as well as mobile ticketing based on QR codes and/or near field communication (NFC) technology.

 

Key contractors: A joint venture of SYSTRA Group, EGIS Rail SA, and AECOM Asia Company Limited secured a contract to provide general engineering consultancy (GEC) services for the project. The scope of work includes review of the detailed project report (DPR), design review, provision of procurement assistance for civil and system works, provision of construction supervision for civil and system works, system integration, overall project management, safety and quality check, and testing and commissioning.

 

The key construction contractors are:

 

● A joint venture (JV) of M/s Sadhbhav Engineering Limited and S.P. Singla Constructions Private Limited secured the INR18.7 billion contract to        construct the 11.6-km elevated section from Dream City to Chowk Bazar.

 

● M/s Infra Projects secured the INR9.43 billion contract to construct the 3.6-km underground section from Chowk Bazar to Surat Railway Station.

 

● A JV of Gülermak and Sam India Builtwell secured the INR9.29 billion contract to construct the 3.46-km underground section from Kapodara to Central Warehouse.

 

● ITD Cementation secured the INR3.5 billion contract to construct a depot. The scope of work also includes construction of the operations control centre (OCC) and the metro headquarters at Dream City.

 

● A joint venture (JV) of Sadhbhav Engineering Limited and S.P. Singla Constructions Private Limited secured the INR7.79 billion contract to construct an 11.6-km elevated viaduct from Kadarsha Ni Nal to Dream City, a ramp for depot entry near Dream City, and 10 new stations.

 

 Recent developments:


● In September 2021, GMRC awarded four contracts worth INR30.02 billion for the construction work.

 

● In August 2021, a JV of SYSTRA Group, EGIS Rail SA, and AECOM Asia Company Limited secured a contract to provide support services for the project.

 

● In June 2021, ITD Cementation received the contract to construct the Dream City train depot, the operations control centre (OCC), and the Metro Bhavan headquarters.

 

● In January 2021, the JV of Sadhbhav Engineering Limited and S.P. Singla Constructions Private Limited secured an INR7.79 billion construction contract to construct the 11.6-km elevated viaduct.
