MDOT MTA announces plans to modernise fare collection system, US [free access]

October 11, 2021

The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) has announced plans to modernise its fare collection system. The system is expected to be fully operational by 2025.

The system will allow access to stored-value and fare products loaded into an account. It will support all-door boarding options on local bus services. The new system will also support fare-capping functions.

New faregates will also be installed at Metro SubwayLink stations and new fare validators will be installed across core service modes. Passengers will have the option of using their CharmCard, CharmPass, open payments with their credit or debit card, or use mobile payments with Apple Pay and Google Pay. Cash will continue to be accepted at the new fareboxes.

The Maryland Board of Public Works has approved USD63.6 million for the project.
